What you see above is Arthur Sales taking part in a photo-shoot for L’Officiel Hommes, I remember Lara Stone in the same make-up but it was for French Vouge(OCT 09). The thought of even using this technique saddens me. Blackface has a somewhat long history around oppression and disgrace but apparently Lagerfeld and Vukmirovic don’t see that. Maybe I’m just too close-minded to see it for something else. Maybe over the years after learning about racism Ive grown sensitive to the subject, well either that or Europeans just don’t grasp the disrespect in blackface.  I hope that I’ll never have to witness (in person) models on the runway in blackface because then I’ll faced with a big decision;whats more important: my job or my morals? Besides that, this shoot lacked luster.

ps i dont know for sure why this photo-shoot was even done. I guess we’ll just have to wait for the article.

pss. I wonder if either of these ever considered putting a swastika on the cover.

Sunday, November 22 on ABC the the 2009 American Music Awards premiered. I watched the awards for one reason and one reason only, Lady|GaGa. I enjoyed her performance as I always do. But what stood out most was her dancers’ outfits. The skull and bones pieces memorized me. I want the head piece so bad right now. It didn’t hit me till last night (2 days after the event) that I’d seen them before. I was utterly ashamed that I’d forgotten about them. Back in September the pieces were part of a photo-shoot titled “Bondage Warriors”, VogueHJ.  The shoot was photographed by Steven Klein and styled by Nicola Formichetti.

Bad Romance v3 by Akeem featuring Giuseppe Zanotti shoes

Lady gaga is an inspiration. I’ve recently been working on a way to express my own “Bad Romance”. It’s pretty much filled with the pain and anger that comes with love. At first I thought “why not write a song” but writing a song just makes me feel as if I’m coping her. To help me come up with an idea I listened to Bad Romance about 100 times while thinking about the anger, it just made me even angrier. In the end I decided to present it through photoshop and possibly a drawing or two.

This is Pelayo Diaz Zapico, a student at Central Saint Martins in England. If you havent heard of him before then you must be brain dead. Pelayo at 23 has become well known across the world for his artistic exclusive idea of style and avant-garde like blog (k a t e l o v e s m e). His whole-being intrigues me, from the tipsy photos of him and GalaGonzalez partying, to the spreads in Nylon, GQ and/or RODEO.
